Energy Observer anchors in Nice for UN Ocean Conference : A beacon of innovation for a sustainable future

After more than seven years of pioneering exploration across the globe, the zero-emission vessel Energy Observer will arrive in Nice on June 2, 2025, to take part in the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference. As a flagship of technological innovation and ecological transition, the vessel will not only showcase cutting-edge solutions for protecting the ocean but also serve as an active platform for dialogue, education, and action in the face of escalating environmental challenges.

After seven years of sailing around the globe, the laboratory vessel Energy Observer will drop anchor in Nice on June 2, 2025, for a major global event : the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC). Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, this conference will bring together heads of state, scientists, NGOs, and businesses around a common goal : to ensure the lasting protection of the ocean, a vital pillar of our collective future.

A symbol of ecological transition, Energy Observer is the world’s first hydrogen-powered vessel that is fully energy self-sufficient, combining renewable energy sources with cutting-edge storage technologies. Since 2017, it has been sailing the seas to test sustainable solutions and raise public awareness of climate and marine issues. Its presence at UNOC 2025 sends a strong message : technological innovation can — and must — serve the preservation of marine ecosystems.

In Nice, Energy Observer will be more than a mere observer. The vessel will actively take part in discussions and host educational sessions, scientific demonstrations, and opportunities for public engagement. It will be a moment to remind the world that the ocean — covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface — plays a crucial role in regulating the climate, producing oxygen, and sustaining biodiversity.

As the UN warns of the rapid degradation of marine environments, Energy Observer’s arrival in the Bay of Angels represents a symbolic union of innovation and ecological commitment. More than just a boat, it is an ambassador of a sustainable future, embodying the hope of a resilient, clean, and united maritime transition.

After more than seven years of global exploration, the Energy Observer will make a stopover in Nice on June 2, 2025, as part of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC). This major international event, co-organized by France and Costa Rica, aims to strengthen global ocean governance by bringing together leaders, scientists, NGOs, businesses, and engaged citizens.

More than a participant, Energy Observer intends to play a central role in the conference : that of a living demonstrator of an ongoing energy and maritime transition. As the first vessel in the world to produce its own hydrogen on board from renewable sources, it offers a tangible, replicable response to climate and oceanic challenges. Its visit to Nice reflects a strong commitment to placing technology at the service of the planet, while creating a space for dialogue, education, and inspiration.

During UNOC, Energy Observer will host workshops, scientific meetings, educational tours, and discussions with decision-makers on board. Its mission : to show that solutions already exist for decarbonized maritime transport, a more responsible blue economy, and an integrated approach to ocean protection.

As marine ecosystems continue to deteriorate under human pressure, Energy Observer positions itself as a catalyst for action — a bridge between science, technology, and civic engagement. Its presence in Nice, in the framework of a UN conference, is a call for collective ambition : so that the ocean — cradle of life and climate regulator — is finally recognized as a global priority.
