At just 28 years old, Marie Perrin has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising minds by winning the prestigious Young Inventors Prize awarded by the European Patent Office. Her invention, REEcover, offers an innovative and sustainable solution to a major global challenge : the recycling of rare earth elements.

Rare earth elements, essential to the production of smartphones, wind turbines, and electric vehicles, are finite resources whose extraction has severe environmental impacts. Developed in her Grenoble-based laboratory, Marie’s REEcover device recovers these valuable materials from electronic waste using an electrochemical process that is both energy-efficient and free from toxic chemicals.

By developing an effective recycling technology, REEcover directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It contributes to SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) by extending the life cycle of resources, SDG 13 (climate action) by reducing emissions linked to mining activities, and SDG 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure) by promoting a circular and innovative economy.

The jury praised the project’s global potential : “REEcover is not just a clever invention, it is a tangible step towards a cleaner and more responsible industry.”

During the award ceremony, Marie emphasized the importance of accessible and engaged science : “To innovate is also to think about future generations. Every idea has the potential to become a solution for our planet.”
