Monitoring of this indicator showed that macro-litter on the French mainland coastline decreased by nearly 22% between 2019 and 2024. Despite this decline, pollution levels remained above the threshold defining good environmental status for the marine habitat (20 items of macro-litter per 100 metres), demonstrating the need to continue efforts to combat marine litter through reduction, prevention and awareness-raising actions on land, along rivers, water networks, port and coastal areas, and in connection with maritime activities.

In February 2017, France drew up a national strategy for the sea and coast (SNML) setting out long-term goals in this area. Following the revision process, the SNML 2024-2030 was adopted and published by decree on 10 June 2024. The revision of the Sea Basin Strategy Documents (SBSDs) for mainland France’s four coastline regions was launched following the adoption of the SNML. Strategic components of the updated SBSDs (Sea Basin Strategy Documents) were adopted at the end of 2025 for the four coastlines: Eastern English Channel and North Sea (MEMN), North Atlantic West Channel (NAMO), South Atlantic (SA), and Mediterranean (MED).

The network of French marine protected areas is gradually expanding (within waters under French jurisdiction and sovereignty). It covers all French marine territories and is distributed as follows: 45.3% of French mainland coastlines; 33.1% of overseas marine areas.

Between 2000 and 2021, the nitrate fluxes entering the sea remained stable at an average of around 503,000 tonnes per year. With 270,000 tonnes per year on average, the Atlantic coast accounts for more than half (54%) of the fluxes reaching the sea. The English Channel-North Sea represented 31% of fluxes (154,000 tonnes per year on average) and the Mediterranean 16% (80,000 tonnes per year on average).

Les flux de phosphore ont diminué de 68 % sur la période entre 2000 et 2018, Ce résultat était lié à l’amélioration des performances des stations d’épuration, à l’interdiction de l’utilisation des phosphates dans les lessives, à l’augmentation du nombre d’habitants raccordés à un assainissement collectif et dans une moindre mesure à la diminution de l’utilisation d’engrais phosphatés en agriculture, Depuis 2019, la tendance à la hausse continue pour atteindre en 2021, 17 700 tonnes de phosphore qui ont été rejetés en mer via les cours d’eau métropolitains,

There are many kinds of marine pollution (oil slicks, chemical pollution, sound pollution, marine waste, etc.), and this can be voluntary (illegal dumping) or accidental (collisions, damage, vessels running aground, loss of containers during storms, etc.). Of the pollution confirmed by POLREPs (pollution reports), the majority (57%) concerned hydrocarbon pollution (illegal dumping, damage, collision, accidents at sea or in an estuary - from refineries or vessels). This was mainly found on maritime traffic routes across the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean, to the east of Corsica and along the Mediterranean coast.
