According to the latest reports from the data observatory on public provision of water supply and sanitation services, the yield of drinking water networks demonstrated a steady increase between 2018 and 2023. The average efficiency of drinking water distribution networks was estimated at nearly 80%. Water losses therefore represented around 20%; for every 5 litres of water supplied to the distribution network, 1 litre returns to the natural environment without reaching consumers.

This indicator assesses the compliance of all wastewater treatment facilities within a sewerage service in relation to the performance requirements set out in the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. Between 2017 and 2022, this indicator fell by 5.7 points. This was an improvement compared with the previous period, but performance remained below the trajectory required to achieve the indicator’s optimal target.

Physico-chemical compliance at national level was 92.10% – Physico-chemical compliance of tap water (national average, France) in 2025 (https://www.services.eaufrance.fr/). This value can be largely explained by a higher number of non-compliant pesticide analyses. Newly identified substances are responsible for the exceedances of the regulatory quality standard, resulting in a greater number of non-compliances. However, this reflects improved monitoring rather than a deterioration in water quality.
